Saturday night at the movies....

Not quite, but on Saturday night he was determined to stay up and watch Shrek on TV.  Needless to say it was on a little too late for a three year old and he fell asleep about half an hour into it.

I love how angelic kids look when they sleep!

Quilt update...

9 lovely thoughts
The last few days has seen me hand stitching the nights and mornings away.  As we head into Winter (officially tomorrow I guess) I have realised it's going to be a cold one so we need more blankets!  I started on a quilt a couple of months ago and at that stage I was thinking of selling it once it was finished.  Well all that changed after I spent hours and hours hand stitching!

It is by no means a traditional quilt, more of a piece it together as you go job.  It is far, far from perfect and many experienced quilters may gasp (some may even faint) but when I started this I didn't own an iron!  All it has really cost me is the price of a thrifted woollen blanket (about $5) as I used up fabric from my stash.

More hand stitching than I realised *sigh*
Inattention meant alot of injuries!
But I think it will be worth it - it's so heavy it has to be warm!

Circus Quirkus...

3 lovely thoughts
A few weeks ago we were give some tickets for Circus Quirkus - a non-animal Circus style show.  On the drive over Elijah was getting a bit nervous about going.  When I asked why he said 'Are there going to be lions?  I don't want them to eat me'.  We explained that there would be no animals, just acrobats and things.  When we arrived Elijah asked where the elephants were.  I told him there were no elephants here, only people doing cool things!
It certainly was a great show and I'd like to point out that it was totally free.  The Rotary Club of Newmarket funded the whole thing by getting sponsors from businesses in the area.  I let Elijah loose with the camera, both at the show and on the drive home - he loves taking photos and I love to see the concentration on his face while he takes them.
Love his artistic shot!

You can sort of see the tumblers

At intermission - alot of people had left the stadium by then

Elijah is fascinated by the Sky Tower - like most kids I guess

Look at that beautiful blue sky!

Another artistic shot

Oh yes he loves McDonalds - we didn't eat there though

It was such a nice day out that we let Elijah have a bit of a run around on a muddy field (eek my worst nightmare is cleaning up a muddy kid)

and he walked away clean!

To ban or not to ban...

myself from thrifting/op shopping?  I wish I had the strength but seriously I have so much fun while out op shopping - and so does Elijah!  I do think that sometimes I go a bit too often - this week we went twice.  Actually we made five visits - twice to the Salvation Army, twice to the little church op shop and once to the Red Cross op shop.  So, what makes me keep going back?

Lots of stuff!

Children's books are always a favourite

This one was a freebie - it helps to be friendly ;)  I'm not sure how old it is because it doesn't have a date but it's pretty nonetheless - Hard Times by Charles Dickens

I'm going to learn how to knit - I really am!  Look at those delicious cottons...

Some lovely Irish linen placemats - I'm assuming they are placemats - they are rectangular.

Yes, Elijah does quite well out of these expeditions - not pictured is the Hot Wheels track thing that he decided to use in the bath last night
He was so excited 'I read two pages all by myself Mum!'  The night before we had read together - I taught him how to sound out words.  He's pretty clever and knows all his letters and their sounds - not bad for a three year old

Rumpelstiltskin!

Op shopping is highly addictive!  The upside is that this addiction doesn't cost as much as other addictions (like shoes), it's non-toxic (unlike smoking) and it doesn't make you put on weight (unlike
chocolate).  I feel it's also good for your morale when you walk out with a bargain!  The only downside is you end up with alot of stuff.  But you know how it goes - reduce, recycle, reuse and all that.

I was hoping to sit down and sew sometime today but I'm a sucker for punishment and had Chinese takeaways last night.  I now have a mild migraine - I should have known better!  MSG overdose I think they call it?

Anyway, can't complain.  We have blue skies here today, a few showers but mostly sun.  Just a beautiful Autumn day

Online Fabric Purchases

9 lovely thoughts
I have always been a little apprehensive about buying fabric online so to put my mind at ease I started off with a couple of scrap packs from Melinda at  Every Spare Minute.

Firstly, a little bit about the scrap packs.  You can buy them on Trade Me but you have to be quick or you'll miss out!  You don't get to choose which fabrics you receive but you get a clue as to which colour range you will receive designs from.  For example, I chose Teal/Green and Pink/Orange so I got the beautiful fabrics pictured above.  So how much fabric do you actually get?  A combination of three different fabrics totalling no less than 60cm, perfect for small crafts or building up your stash - because you never know when you might need some pretty fabric!

While you're there, take a look at her range or fabrics.  You will find designers such as Amy Butler, Alexander Henry, Patty Young and Michael Miller.  If you're like me, Spotlight only holds it's interest for a while because although their range is huge it is always same old, same old.

I am, by the way, super happy with my scrap pack.  As yet I'm unsure what I will do with them - so I'm opening this up for suggestions.  What do you think?

Torta (now with recipe)

Those of you who know me personally will know that I spent a year in Paraguay at the end of high school.  I know it's really bad but one of the things I enjoyed most was the food - the sweet stuff in particular.  I attended many, many birthday celebrations and fell in love with their cakes.  Although I don't make an exact replica at home, it still tastes pretty good.  Delicious actually.

I was in a hurry when I made this one as I had a friend coming for morning tea.  If I had been organised I could have made it the previous night.  So basically you have layers of sponge (best if they are half the thickness I have cut them), diced peaches, caramel (I buy it tinned which tastes almost as good as dulce de leche) and cover it with meringue mixture - you could bake it but I'm naughty and have it uncooked but kept in the fridge at all times.  Actually it would probably make a nice pudding if you baked it after smothering it in meringue - hmm something to try!

Basic Recipe - no cooking involved!
1 store bought sponge cake
1 can of Nestle Caramel
1 tin of diced peaches
4 egg whites
2/3 cup of caster sugar (I'm guessing this because I just poured it from the pack)

So basically you need to slice the sponge cake into thin layers - this would be easiest when the sponge is not freshly baked.  Spread enough caramel on the bottom slice to suit your taste.  Top with sponge.  Next layer will be the diced peaches making sure there is enough juice to soak the sponge - similar to trifle I guess.  Then another layer of sponge.  Continue alternating layers.  Leave the top sponge plain.  Beat your eggs to make a meringue mixture, add the sugar and beat some more then spread all over your prepared cake.  Keep stored in the fridge.  Please note that eating raw egg white has risks especially for those with compromised immune systems so if you think you may be at risk, I recommend baking it.

Now, if you are really good you could make from scratch.  A sponge cake is fairly simple and for this cake it doesn't really matter if you manage to flop it!  There are numerous methods to make caramel(dulce de leche) but the most simple would be boiling a tin of condensed milk.

The value of op shopping....

13 lovely thoughts
I know alot of you will already know that op shopping or thrifting, allows you to get alot of 'stuff' for very little money.  But you have to shop around because not all op shops are alike.  In fact, their pricing structures can vary widely with some items deemed rubbishy by some being priced higher than some more valuable items.

I consider myself quite lucky to be close to some op shops that have very high turnovers.  I thought that I would show those who haven't stepped foot into an op shop, what exactly your money will buy on any given day.  Below are my purchases from three separate op shops.

#1 a (very) small church operated op shop
$1 could get you a cute cup, a pretty doily, a book of patterns, some pieces of fleece, an old school journal and a Japanese text book

#2 A Red Cross store
$4.60 could get you a genuine My Little Pony soft toy, a Kate Finn horse rattle, an Emily the Strange hoody, toy truck (not pictured) and a pretty Windsorware saucer

#3 a Salvation Army Family Store
$24 could get you a new sewing chair, a Winnie the Pooh nursery rhyme book, a book for myself, 26 assorted doilies and napkins, a named cup for Ella (niece), a cute little gingham tablecloth, a Nici Little Wingles soft toy (so cute), a Leapfrog Alphabet Pal, a bright hand knitted hat for Elijah (new) and a stainless steel tea pot

So for less than $30 I 1) had alot of fun & 2) bought alot of stuff!

So, if you haven't been in an op shop lately - go!  You don't know what you're missing!

At my house...

6 lovely thoughts
It's still miserable weather here in Auckland.  We won't be leaving the house today, that's for sure!  Thankfully it isn't as cold as yesterday so the heater is having a rest while the dehumidifier sucks all the dampness out of the house.

As Winter approaches the house seems to get darker and darker.  But what makes it worse is all my furniture is dark brown!  So I saw a post over here and although I haven't done such a great job, it certainly does warm up the room and make it a bit lighter.

The striped sheets some of you will recognise from this post - they are vintage Marimekko!

Not advice but jeans!

From this tired old pair of Dad's jeans

To some cute jeans for Elijah

They even have a zip AND I used a pattern!

It was actually a pattern dated 1972 and these were meant to be dress pants but have turned out quite funky in denim.  They have an elasticated waist at the back and a zip and dome - I forgot that I really, really disliked domes!  They're a size four so I expect them to fit a while.

I'll get some better pictures tomorrow - hopefully.  We've had the most dreadful weather all day, so gloomy and cold.  We're expecting a weather bomb to hit New Zealand tonight - fun!

Flea Market Finds...

I bought these a while ago actually.  I have no idea what I was thinking.  I can't crochet but I guess one day I might have to sit down and learn.  Or give this lot away.

I wouldn't even know what you'd make with it - a bag maybe?

And for those of you who crochet, look at this cute vintage container full of crochet threads

Closes tomorrow (Monday 24th) on Trade Me

CraftWorld

We took a quick detour on our way home from the Shore today and stopped in at CraftWorld.  I've been wanting to go there for a while now and since it was on our way and a beautiful sunny day I was prepared to risk an impatient three year old just so I could have a browse.

I was absolutely amazed.  The place is huge!  I recognised some names from blogs I read and I spotted Jennie's girls a mile off!  They're as beautiful in person as they are on screen.

We came away with a few little trinkets

Mini wheatbags for Elijah to warms his toes in bed
He chose a small rock for the garden
And of course the magnet is mine!  An incentive to save, maybe?

I have to say I was quite impressed.  I didn't expect there to be so many stalls/booths in there, and so many different crafts! There really are some talented people in New Zealand.

I also bought some fabric and ribbon from Spotlight.  I have no idea what to do with it yet but whenever I go there, I stand back and look at the rows of quilting fabric and see what jumps out.

Elijah chose the alphabet fabric - he had three to choose from, the other two had skulls and pirates but he opted for this one.  And I just thought the ribbon was cute!

Protective Earmuffs by Baby Banz - Review

5 lovely thoughts
When I was asked to review some safety earmuffs a few weeks ago, I jumped at the chance.  Previously I had no idea they had existed for children, so I did a quick bit of research before they arrived in the mail.  While we were in test mode – which for a three year old is loads of fun – I thought about the different environments the earmuffs could be useful in and what we, as parents, should do to protect our children’s hearing.

We have so much to worry about as parents already – could their hearing be one of the last things we think about?  I am one of those guilty of neglect in this respect and although I check his ears every other day, I never really thought about protecting his ears from noise.  Even though there are a number of other causes of hearing loss, there are ways to protect ourselves to minimise damage.

Is there really such a product available for kids?

Baby Banz Protective Earmuffs are designed for children aged from 6 months to 10 years and older.  As for size, they fit me and I guess I have an average sized adult head!  It’s important to note these are not toys but high quality Class 4 rated ear protection that not only look great but protect your young ones from loud noises.  They are lightweight and kids love to wear them.

When would you use them?

There are a number of noisy environments that our children are exposed to on a daily basis.  Just think
  • the buzz of the lawn mower
  • the whir of the vacuum cleaner
  • the beat of the car stereo
  • the boom of passing trucks while out walking

Then there are special events
  • fireworks displays
  • boat trips
  • car races
  • concerts

The scenarios are endless really especially in our fast paced modern lives.  They are comfortable with their soft cushion cups (once again I tried them for myself)

Did they stand up to our tests and did they work?

From a 3 year old’s point of view, they are fantastic-cool!  When they first arrived he tore the package open and asked them to put on straight away.  As you can see he was pretty happy with them!  While loud noises are minimised he can still easily hear my instructions.  How do I know?  I asked him to follow instructions while wearing them, and then I tried them myself!  They are adjustable to suit all sizes and they are oh so comfy!  They would be perfect for when the kids are being noisy.  You could ‘borrow’ their ear muffs and sit down with a book.

Are they worth buying?

Absolutely!  At twice the price they would still offer great value.  They will also donate a portion to The National Foundation for the Deaf, a non-profit, non-government organisation who supports NZers with hearing loss and encourages hearing preservation.  When you know a product will be used for a particular number of years it makes sense to buy quality.  Kids love them so they will wear them.  They come in a range of colours so there is something for everyone.
And they are tough - Elijah being the little mechanic that he is managed to pull off an ear piece but it was really simple to snap it back into place.  I have to add that Elijah is incredibly strong - so strong that when I tried to pull them apart I couldn't!  And you can be sure they are the highest quality under the Baby Banz brand, who also stock a range of other child safety products.  You only have to search Baby Banz on Youtube to see they are a worldwide hit!

'So where can I buy these?' I hear you say...

You can purchase through the Baby Banz website or if you'd like to see the product first there is a list of retailers here so wherever you are in NZ (or the world!) they are readily accessible.

Friday Pretties...

A few days ago I agreed to post something Pretty on Fridays when I saw this over at I Love Pretty Little Things.  I'm not home at the moment, I'm at my Mum's house which is an 1865 homestead and she has it filled with pretty little things.

Three of these are mine! Can you guess which ones?

Some fresh pretty :)

The photos aren't the best because it's a dreary old day here in Auckland.
